Herbs for Living
Registration is now open for Herbs for Living, my new 12-month course that guides you through herbs + ritual for life's big emotions.
I had the idea for the course this fall. I was reflecting on how much I enjoyed teaching Practical Herbalism last year, a course that focused on herbs for various organs and organ systems. It was a great course, people liked it, and I liked teaching it. But as much as I aimed to make the herbal info relevant and easy to apply, it still felt like I hadn't quite found the most potent way of teaching herbs.
For one thing, most people don't have all those health issues all the time. It might be interesting to learn about herbs for lymphatic health and kidney health and heart health, but most folks aren't dealing with lymphatic and kidney and heart problems on a regular basis (thankfully.) One or two of the topics might be relevant to the average LL student, then the rest of the info is tucked into their back pockets for when they need it.
And, while it's nice to have that info in your back pocket for when you need it, I wanted to make a course filled with info that's relevant on, say, a weekly basis.
So I thought, how do John and I truly use herbs in our home? We use herbs for health: to prevent and heal all the illness circulating around, to help our tummies feel better, and to take care of our skin. I've used nourishing herbs to support reproductive health. Those are the health topics that come up most often. We're fortunate to not be managing more complex heath situations on a weekly basis.
But here's the thing: though we're not managing health issues frequently, we use herbs every day. Herbs are woven into the rhythm of each day. It's not something we plan for or even think much about: it's simply the way we move through our days and weeks.
Upon more scrutinizing reflection, I realized that we primarily use herbs to manage our emotions.
We use herbs when we've had a rough day, when we're overwhelmed, when I'm sad, when John's frustrated, when we're excited about something, when we have friends over for dinner, when we want to celebrate the first snowfall or a summer Sunday walk. I use herbs when I'm sitting down to journal to untangle old inner knots, when I'm setting intentions, and when I'm trying to get myself to finally do something.
These are the topics that people encounter on a weekly basis: our feelings.
So I set out to make a course to reflect that.
Herbs for Living will be similar to other courses I've taught: I'll explore how herbs can interact with that emotion or life process, discuss 5-10 herbs that are relevant, and go over recipes and personal ritual to support you. (And, because I can't help myself, each emotion will be tied to an organ or organ system so that you'll get extra medicinal knowledge). The difference is that the course will be geared towards things you are actually very likely to encounter on a regular basis.
The other difference is that, while this is a 12-month course, you can join at any time. The curriculum will somewhat build upon itself (for instance, we'll focus different herbs in each class) but you can hop in at any time.
Details are below. Snoop at will, and reply with questions if you have them. Full details are here.
One more thing: To give you a taste of what these classes will be like, I'm teaching a free class called Herbs for Resilience next week. You'll learn about adaptogens: what they are, how to use them the right way, and how to pair them with other herbs. You'll also do some reflecting and learn a ritual to develop your inner resilience. The class will be Monday night, but you'll be sent a recording if you register. Click here to register for Herbs for Resilience. (Note: I taught this back in January but you can get a recording of the class by clicking that link.)
yours in big feelings,
Amanda
