Which herb are you?

If you were an herb, who would you be?

This is a question I like to ask myself when I'm in the garden weeding, or garbling dried herbs. More accurately, I ask myself "When I'm writing an herbal graphic novel in which my friends appear as herbal characters, which herbs will represent them?"

Lemme tell you, this is one of my favorite games.

But it's not just a game.

Asking yourself this question (whether it's about you, your trio of cats, or your unsuspecting co-workers) is a way of altering your perspective when it comes to herbs. It's a playful way of shifting your viewpoint from herbs-as-medicinal-substance to herbs-as-unique-characters.

And that perspective shift is huge.

When you ask yourself which herb you (or your grumpiest cat) would be, you being to consider the plants beyond their medicinal qualities. You begin to consider their personalities, quirks, the way they stand tall or flop languidly, the way they make you feel surprised or happy or woozy, the way you might feel comforted or provoked or inspired by them.

Seeing herbs from the perspective of friends, characters, weirdos with personality quirks is a crucial step in developing your herbal intuition.

And with a strong herbal intuition, the possibilities of the entire earth will just be a sip -- or a spell -- away.

yours in magic,

Amanda
